    Export a Section (In/Out Range)

Export only part of your timeline using In/Out points, or export a marker's range directly from the timeline.

    What a Section Export Is

A normal export renders the whole timeline. A section export renders only the part between an In point and an Out point. A 20-minute recording can give a 40-second clip, and nothing is cut from the project.

The In/Out range is a selection, not an edit. Clear it and your project is the same as before.

    Set In and Out Points

With the timeline or preview in focus:

    1. Move the playhead to the start of the section and press I.
    2. Move the playhead to the end of the section and press O.

The range shows on the timeline ruler. Drag either handle to change it.

    💡

You can set only one point. An In point alone exports from there to the end of the timeline. An Out point alone exports from the start of the timeline to that point.

    Clear the Range

Press ⌥X. Or right-click the range and choose Clear Selection. You can also run Clear In/Out Range from the command palette.

    Export the Range

    Use one of these ways:

    • Right-click the range on the timeline and choose Export Range.... The export dialog opens with In/Out selected.
    • Press ⌘E. In the Range row, click In/Out.

When you press ⌘E, the dialog always starts on Full timeline. The In/Out option shows "not set" when there is no range. The size estimate and the duration follow the range you choose.

    ⚠️

The Range row is hidden for Animated GIF and Final Cut Pro XML, and when you export to a share link. These exports always use the full timeline. The dialog shows a note that your In/Out range is not applied. Choose a video format, or export to a file, and the range comes back.

    Export a Marker's Range

If you mark sections while you edit, you do not need to set In/Out points by hand.

    1. Right-click a range marker in the markers lane.
    2. Choose Export Range....

The marker range becomes the In/Out range, and the export dialog opens with In/Out selected. Repeat this for each marker to export a long recording section by section.

Export Range... shows only for range markers of the segment type. A point marker has no range.

    Make Range Markers

    • Drag across the markers lane to draw a range. The name field opens when you release.
    • Or press M to drop a marker, then press M again where the section ends. Press Escape to keep the marker as a point.

Double-click a marker to name it. Right-click it to edit or delete it.
