How to Record a Zoom Meeting on Mac (With or Without Permission)
Zoom is the standard for meetings, but its built-in recording feature has limitations. If you are not the host, or if the host has disabled recording, you cannot record the meeting natively. Even when you are allowed to record, Zoom's cloud recordings are often low resolution and compress your webcam video heavily.
If you need to archive a presentation, capture a tutorial, or save a meeting for notes, you can record it locally on your Mac.
Here is how to record Zoom calls with clear internal audio and mic capture.
The ScreenKite Solution: Record your meetings locally in full HD or 4K. ScreenKite captures both system audio (your teammates speaking) and your microphone natively without meeting alerts. Free during beta. Download ScreenKite for Mac →
Step 1: Set Up Your Video Layout
Before starting your recording, configure your Zoom window to capture the necessary inputs:
- Speaker View: Best if you are recording a single presenter.
- Gallery View: Best if you want to capture the entire group interaction.
- Hide the Zoom floating toolbar if you want a clean recording.
Step 2: Configure System Audio Capture
Capturing audio from a video conference call is difficult because you need to record two distinct streams:
- Your Microphone: Your local voice.
- System Audio: The voices of the other meeting participants.
Basic recorders like QuickTime will only capture one or the other. To capture both, ensure your recording software is configured to capture both microphone input and internal system audio.
Step 3: Record Locally and Securely
Start your local screen recorder, select the Zoom window or your active screen, and begin recording.
Because you are recording locally, the file is saved directly to your hard drive. This offers two major advantages:
- Privacy: The recording does not upload to Zoom's cloud servers, ensuring internal meetings remain private.
- Resolution: Your recording will capture the display at native resolution rather than the compressed 720p streams saved by Zoom.
