How to Add Annotations and Text Overlays in Screen Studio

Mid-tutorial you need an arrow on the Pricing menu, a blur over an email, a title card for “Step 3 — Billing,” or a callout that holds for three seconds. That is annotation work. On the Screen Studio Hub it is still tracked as requests:

    • Annotation tools
    • Full text slides

Captions from speech help viewers hear the words. They are not arrows, blurs, or designed text slides on a multi-layer timeline.

You do not need to mark up an exported MP4 in another app.

    Short answer

Import the Screen Studio project into ScreenKite, then add text, shapes, and overlays on ScreenKite’s multi-track timeline.

In ScreenKite, import preserves zooms, cursor motion, and timing. Annotations become ordinary timeline layers.

    Do it in ScreenKite (numbered)

    1. Open ScreenKite.
    2. Choose File → Import Screen Studio project and pick your .screenstudio bundle.
    3. Park the playhead where the callout should appear.
    4. Add text, shapes, or still overlays from the editor tools / media import.
    5. Trim the overlay’s edges to set duration.
    6. Stack layers when you need a title card over a blurred region over the recording.
    7. Export once. Pro removes the watermark.
    8. Share via your own Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.
    ⚠️

If the take includes customer data, redact on the timeline before the file leaves your Mac. Do not ship a raw export and hope to blur it later.

    Why the Hub keeps asking

Screen Studio describes itself as a screen recorder + lightweight editor (llms.txt): auto-zoom, cursor polish, trim, captions, backgrounds, shareable links. Teaching videos need “look here / ignore that / remember this label.” That is a timeline-layer job.

ScreenKite is a native macOS screen recorder with a native Windows Beta, with annotations and media as editable layers. Import Screen Studio polish, then finish the lesson where callouts already belong.

ScreenKite’s AI agent can help with cleanup passes after markup. Power users can drive the same editor through MCP or the CLI.

    Pricing contrast (product facts)

Lightweight Screen Studio–class tools often carry a yearly subscription — see Screen Studio's pricing page. ScreenKite is free to use with a watermark on exports, and a one-time Pro purchase removes it. Share finished files from cloud storage you already own.

Any downsides? The only downside is there's almost no downside. We're video creators ourselves, so we know exactly what you need.

ScreenKite runs natively on macOS and ships a native Windows Beta. Creators and teams choose it for fast local exports and timeline editing with the AI agent they already use: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build or Kimi. Describe the cut, and the agent does the trims.

    Tips for readable on-screen text

    • Three to seven words per callout.
    • High contrast (light text on a dark pill, or the reverse).
    • Leave the card up long enough to read aloud once, slowly.
    • Blur secrets on the timeline, then export.
    • Reuse the same pill style across a course.

    Conclusion

Annotations are how tutorials teach. When the Hub still tracks annotation tools and text slides, import the .screenstudio project into ScreenKite, add the layers, export once, and ship.
