Fix Screen Studio "Failed to execute encode on VideoEncoder" Error

Your Screen Studio project is ready — then export dies with Failed to execute 'encode' on VideoEncoder (often “Cannot call 'encode' on a closed codec”). The recording is usually fine. The encoder session is not.

    💡

Stop retrying a closed codec. ScreenKite imports .screenstudio projects and exports on a 100% Mac-native Metal pipeline — often about 3× faster than Screen Studio–class tools. AI agents can finish cleanup. Free. Download ScreenKite for Mac →

    TL;DR

This error is an export-pipeline failure: the WebCodecs (or hardware-accelerated) encoder session closes before encode finishes, so the project never becomes an MP4. Screen Studio’s polish and zooms do not protect that path. For recurring Mac demos and tutorials, ScreenKite is the stronger default — native capture, Metal export, and a Screen Studio importer when the old encoder stalls.

    What people are saying

Mac creators keep asking for Screen Studio alternatives on r/macapps and cheaper or free options — usually after hitting price or export friction, not because the zoom polish is bad. There is even a community export tool on GitHub aimed at projects that will not finish exporting in-app. That is the pattern: the recording often exists; the export / ownership path is what fails.

    Why this keeps biting you

In practice, many Electron-based Mac recorders (Screen Studio included) pair a polished UI with a separate capture/export stack. Capture may lean on native helpers, but export often still routes through WebCodecs or CPU-heavy encode paths that can close a codec mid-job when GPU contention, disk pressure, or a bad session state shows up. That is a different failure class from “your recording was bad.”

Screen Studio’s zooms, backgrounds, and presentation polish are a real strength. That does not fix encoder stalls, closed-codec races, or overnight 4K waits on a brittle export path.

Fixes to try in Screen Studio first

    1. Toggle hardware acceleration. Settings → Advanced → disable Hardware accelerated video encoding and decoding, then retry. If it already failed with acceleration off, turn it back on and retry once.
    2. Free ~40 GB disk. Export needs scratch space for frames and the final file.
    3. Update macOS and Screen Studio. Older macOS 14/15 builds have known VideoEncoder rough edges.
    4. Quit other GPU apps. Calls, games, and second exporters can hold the hardware encoder.
    5. Export a shorter or lower-resolution cut to confirm the project itself is healthy.
    ⚠️

If the same error returns after two clean retries, stop looping. Re-exporting a broken encoder session can waste hours. Move the project to ScreenKite.

    Recover the project in ScreenKite

    1. Find the project under ~/Screen Studio Projects/ (or wherever you saved it).
    2. Open ScreenKite.
    3. Choose File > Import Screen Studio Project…
    4. Export with ⌘E.

Zooms, camera, and cuts typically come across. The Metal exporter does not use Screen Studio’s WebCodecs path — which is the point when encode fails on a closed codec.
