Since Snagit 2025, TechSmith sells Snagit only as an annual subscription with an online check-in every 90 days. Here is what that means for screen video, what long-time users said, and why ScreenKite stays one payment with no subscription.

What changed with Snagit in 2025?
TechSmith's own transition FAQ (updated September 21, 2026) is direct: "TechSmith is transitioning to an annual subscription-only model, beginning with Snagit 2025 and Camtasia 2025." The FAQ dates that release to February 12, 2025.
Three lines in that FAQ matter most for a solo creator:
- "If you stop paying the subscription fee, you lose access to the software. All 2025 and later versions will be subscription licenses."
- Internet access "is necessary for initial activation and then once every 90 days to maintain product functionality."
- "Can I pay monthly? No, we only offer an annual payment plan."
- Snagit captures "are never deleted unless you choose to delete them." After a subscription ends, TechSmith says you have a limited time to export them from Snagit Editor.
Older perpetual copies keep working. TechSmith says Snagit 2024 is supported through December 31, 2026 for customers without maintenance. After that, the perpetual copy you own is on its own. Check the live price on TechSmith's store.
What did long-time Snagit users say?
The anger was not about the money alone. It was about buying something and then renting it.

The same switch hit Camtasia. On Hacker News, robomartin (February 17, 2025) wrote: "they have decided the right way to transition to subscriptions was to automatically convert every single customer to the new model. In other words, no opt-in." TechSmith's FAQ also says exported Camtasia videos stay yours, and project files can still be opened, but exports then carry a watermark.
