Camtasia trained a generation of teachers and product teams on timeline screen video. In 2025 TechSmith moved Snagit and Camtasia to an annual subscription-only model for new 2025+ versions. What TechSmith's FAQ states
From the transition FAQ:
- Snagit 2025 and Camtasia 2025+ are sold as subscription licenses.
- Perpetual versions you already bought remain usable under TechSmith's support policy.
- Active maintenance customers received Legacy License subscription access during the transition.
- If you stop paying a subscription, you lose access to subscription versions when the term ends.
- Desktop apps remain desktop apps. The change is the license model, not a forced cloud-only editor.
That is enough to understand the buyer complaint: a tool many people bought once is now rented yearly for new releases.

@Neil_Dagger said they replaced Camtasia with CleanShot X as a one-time Mac purchase. That is one Mac user's path, not a full product comparison.
