Recordly Stars vs Maturity: Why Screen Recording Needs a Serious Product

Recordly is an open-source screen recorder with a huge GitHub audience. The webadderallorg/Recordly repo showed 28,504 stars when checked on 2026-09-14. Stars are a popularity signal. They are not proof that a screen recorder is ready for demos you cannot afford to lose.

Screen recording is not a toy side project. It asks for Screen Recording, microphone, and often Accessibility. Exports have to finish. Audio has to land in the file. Public timeline: year 11, age 16, school, gap, comeback

These are public posts from the maintainer account @webadderall. Cite them as the author's own words, not as gossip.

• 2026-05-16: year 11, exam block, export bugs, wanting v1.3.0.
• 2026-06-16: "I'm 16, parents put screen time limits..."
• School balance: Day 4, hard to balance with school.
• High school startup camp.
• 2026-09-08 comeback: Mac turned into a brick, logins nuked, back, v1.4.0 soon.

Screen recording asks for Screen Recording, microphone, and often Accessibility. Exports have to finish. When school, exams, or life pull the maintainer away for months, that continuity risk sits with every demo you built on the app.

During the quiet stretch, ScreenKite and others called the gap in public:

• ScreenKite PSA (2026-08-12) on the author disappearing.

The maintainer later returned and shipped again. Do not treat Recordly as permanently abandoned. Treat the gap as evidence that continuity is fragile when one busy student owns the trust surface.

What the repo actually is

Per the GitHub description, Recordly aims at polished demo videos across Mac, Windows, and Linux. The project was created 2026-03-12. Architecture is Electron plus ScreenCaptureKit helpers on Mac (see the repo README and helper naming in public issues).

Release notes for v1.3.5-beta.2 (2026-07-11) state explicitly: Platform availability: Windows x64 and Linux x64 only, because Apple notarization credentials are currently unavailable.

A later release, v1.4.0 (2026-09-08), published macOS DMGs among its assets. You may treat that as Mac installers returning. This post does not claim notarization status for those builds without a primary source checked today.

Issue backlog: export, audio, captions, permissions

These are GitHub user reports. Titles and open/closed state were verified with gh issue view on 2026-09-14. Closed does not mean "never happened." It means the failure mode is public history.

Still open at check time:

• #220 Failed to generate auto captions (open, 12 comments). Caption generation failures, including late reports on beta builds.
• #960 App repeatedly requests Screen Recording permission (open, recent). Permission loop and failed capture after grant on Apple Silicon.

Closed, still useful as history:

• #400 Exported video duration much shorter (closed). Raw and export durations shorter than the recording.

A 28k-star repo with this density of capture and export pain is the maturity problem in one picture.

Cross-platform & Roadmap: macOS is fully native; the Windows native Beta application is now available for download (powered by a dedicated Direct3D/C++23 engine), with a Chrome extension in development.

GitHub stars are not a maturity certificate. The issue tracker still carries export, audio, caption, and permission failures that matter when a screen recorder holds your most privileged Mac permissions.
