Loom to MP4: How to Convert and Save Loom Recordings Locally
Need to save a copy of your Loom video as a standard MP4 file? Learn how to convert Loom recordings to MP4 for offline access and editing — and why local recording is better.
Loom to MP4: How to Convert and Save Loom Recordings Locally
Loom's cloud-first model makes it easy to share a link, but it becomes a major bottleneck when you need the actual video file. Whether you need to upload your recording to YouTube, import it into a video editor, or archive it on your local hard drive, you need a standard .mp4 file.
If you are on Loom's free Starter plan, the "Download" button is locked behind a paywall.
Here is how to get your videos out of Loom's cloud and save them locally as MP4 files.
The Permanent Fix: Stop uploading and downloading your files. ScreenKite is a native Mac screen recorder that saves your recordings directly to your disk as high-quality MP4s. No cloud lag, no download restrictions, and 100% free while in beta. Download ScreenKite for Mac →
Method 1: Use an Online Loom to MP4 Downloader
If you only have one or two public videos to save, you can use a web-based downloader tool:
- Copy the shareable link of your Loom video (e.g.,
https://www.loom.com/share/...). - Go to an online Loom downloader page (like
clipy.onlineor similar free downloaders). - Paste the URL into the input field.
- Click Download and save the generated
.mp4file to your computer.
Warning: Avoid uploading private or sensitive videos to third-party conversion websites. If your video contains credentials, customer data, or internal source code, use the manual browser method below instead.
Method 2: Extract the MP4 URL via Chrome DevTools
For private videos where you cannot use a public third-party downloader, you can manually extract the source video link using your browser's developer console.
- Open Chrome and log into your Loom account.
- Open the video player page.
- Open Developer Tools (Press
Cmd + Option + Ion Mac). - Go to the Network tab.
- In the filter box, type
.mp4or search fortranscoded-url. - Press play on the video.
- Look for the media request, right-click it, and select Open in new tab.
- Right-click the video player in the new tab and select Save Video As... to download the MP4.
Why Is Your Video in the Cloud Anyway?
Loom's cloud model forces you to upload your video data to their servers before you can access it. This makes you dependent on their hosting infrastructure, internet connectivity, and pricing models.
With ScreenKite, your recordings are stored locally as MP4 files from the second you finish recording. You own your video data. There are no limits on recording duration, video count, or export quality—and you never have to pay a subscription to access your own files.
