Short answer: over three years, ScreenKite costs one payment: $79.99 until 2026-10-31, then $99.99. It is a native macOS screen recorder with a native Windows Beta, free to use with a watermark, and that payment never renews. Screen Studio, Camtasia and Loom bill on a schedule. CleanShot X renews for updates. FocuSee runs AI features on credits.

How do I work out a recorder's real three-year cost?

Use this formula with the vendor's own price page open:

    • Subscription: yearly price × 3, or monthly price × 36. Add any AI credit top-ups you expect to buy.
    • Purchase plus update renewal: purchase price + (renewal price × 2) if you want updates in years 2 and 3.
    • ScreenKite: one payment. Year 2 and year 3 add nothing.

Why are Screen Studio users cancelling in 2026?

Not because they dislike it. Screen Studio's FAQ on screen.studio says one-time licenses are "no longer available for new purchases," and fans who like the product are leaving over the renewal:

    • @johnjoubert (October 13, 2026): "I'm also a Screen Studio user. Unfortunately I also had to cancel my annual plan. It just doesn't make sense anymore, which is sad because I actually really like the product."
    • @k77builds (October 13, 2026): "used it using annual plan but had to cancel this year. I am really sad because I really like the product and the editing experience is best."
    • @RVAClassic (October 12, 2026): "I think screen studio is too expensive and there has to be a free alternative out there"
    • @JourneymanChina (October 13, 2026, translated from Chinese) found that recordings sometimes stopped on their own, then saw his license had expired and he would have to pay again to update.

More in Screen Studio Glass Loupe: creators cancel.

    Is CleanShot X a one-time purchase?

Users describe it as a purchase with a cliff. kenperkins on r/MacOSApps (May 6, 2026): "It's a one time payment with a cliff for updates (1 year)." luihgi on r/macapps (July 17, 2026): "the renewal thing always bugged me." Full write-up: CleanShot X alternative without an update renewal.

What happens if I stop paying for Camtasia?

TechSmith's subscription FAQ says Camtasia is annual subscription only, needs internet "once every 90 days to maintain product functionality," and if you stop paying, "you lose access to the software." The same FAQ says exported videos stay yours, and project files can still be opened, but exports then carry a watermark. See Camtasia subscription alternative.

Does FocuSee charge extra for AI?

Yes. FocuSee's pricing page runs its AI features on credits, and its refund terms deduct AI credits you have used. Details in best FocuSee alternatives.

Why does ScreenKite's three-year cost stay one payment?
