Why Cap.so Costs Your Time: a ScreenKite Alternative
Cap.so looks cheap as open source. Public GitHub threads show re-records, freezes, and no AI agent to fix a bad take. ScreenKite is a native Mac NLE with BYO agents and pay-once Pro.
Free to start. Pay once to own. Every editing feature is free. One payment of $79.99 removes the export watermark, covers 3 devices and never renews. Founder price until 2026-10-31, then $99.99. Native macOS 15+. Exports are lightning fast in our tests and in user feedback. 83 purpose-built editing tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice. The fastest editor for AI. ScreenKite.
Cap is an open-source screen recorder many teams try because the sticker price looks low. The real cost shows up in time: a take that dies mid-record, an export that freezes, a cursor that drifts on a long tutorial, and no agent surface to repair the timeline afterward. The public CapSoftware/Cap issues referenced below were checked on 2026-09-16.
The sticker price is not the bill
Open source and a free download do not erase re-records. When a recording stops on its own, when recovery finds no segments, or when export locks the machine, you pay in hours. You also pay when the only fix is to sit through the same demo again.

Public GitHub threads (checked 2026-09-16)
These CapSoftware/Cap issues were open or still relevant when checked on 2026-09-16:
- #1761 : Export exhausts VRAM/RAM and freezes. Windows 11 export at 1080p/4K reported as exhausting memory into an unkillable freeze.
- #2019 : Silent crash during recording. Recording lost with no error dialog on Win11.
- #2055 : Recording stopping in the middle. Take ends with no clear user action.
- #2144 : Cursor gradually out of sync on longer recordings. Cursor drift on long tutorials.
- #109 : Reduce CPU / memory usage whilst recording. Open since 2024-10-09. Resource use while recording remains a tracked request.
Open-source projects close and reopen issues over time. A closed thread is still public evidence that the failure mode happened. An open thread means the report was still live on the check date.
What the time cost looks like in practice
- You script a product walkthrough.
- You record for 15 to 40 minutes.
- Capture dies, freezes, or exports into a stuck state (see issues above).
- You re-record. Or you hand the clip to a second tool.
- A local MCP server for Cap is still an open feature request (#1943, checked 2026-09-16). ScreenKite already ships 83 purpose-built tools for humans and agents on one timeline.
That loop is the bill Cap's sticker price does not show.

How it is built
ScreenKite records and edits in a native Mac app. Agent edits use the same 83 purpose-built tools as the UI over local MCP. Some timeline and transcript actions take a propose call, then a separate commit call. The server does not wait for a human. The Core Agent chat panel is where risk-tier gating lives for that client.
Cap Time Cost vs. ScreenKite
| Need | Cap (public reports, checked 2026-09-16) | ScreenKite |
|---|---|---|
| Finish a take without re-record tax | #2019, #2055 | Native local capture aimed at finishing the take on disk |
| Export without memory freeze | #1761 | Quick local export; lightning fast in our tests and in user feedback |
| Long tutorial cursor accuracy | #2144 | Native capture + timeline fix path |
| CPU / memory while recording | #109 | Native macOS app |
| Agent rescue of a bad take | #1943 FR for local MCP | Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build, Kimi on 83 tools |
| License shape | Open source + Cap cloud plans (see cap.so) | Free to start; Pro is one payment for 3 devices |
Any downsides? The only downside is there's almost no downside, because we're video creators ourselves and know what users need.
ScreenKite runs natively on macOS and ships a native Windows Beta. It's lightning fast, in our tests and in user feedback, and you edit on the timeline with the AI agent you already use: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build or Kimi. Describe the cut, and the agent does the trims.
Is Cap free?
Cap is open source and many people start there because download cost looks low. Treat live plans on cap.so as the source for any cloud seat or paid tier. The time cost shows up in the public GitHub threads above.
Can ScreenKite fix a bad take with an agent?
Yes on the shipped tool surface. Bring Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build, or Kimi. The agent and the UI share 83 purpose-built editing tools. AI fee to ScreenKite is $0.
Does ScreenKite host share links like Loom?
ScreenKite exports a local file. Share that file through Google Drive, YouTube, or your own host.
Bottom line
Cap's sticker price can look low. Public CapSoftware/Cap threads checked on 2026-09-16 document re-records, freezes, cursor drift, and long-open resource requests. A local MCP server for Cap is still an open feature request (#1943).
ScreenKite answers with a native Mac recorder and full timeline editor: free to start with watermarked export, or one founder payment of $79.99 until 2026-10-31 ($99.99 after) for clean exports on 3 devices.
