Cap.so Recording Hangs and Export Freezes — a Native ScreenKite Alternative

    💡

Free to start. Pay once to own. Every editing feature is free. One payment of $79.99 removes the export watermark, covers 3 Macs and never renews. Founder price until 2026-10-31, then $99.99. Native local recorder. Metal export up to 3 times faster in our tests. ScreenKite.

Cap is an open-source screen recorder many teams try when they want something lighter than a full NLE. Public reliability threads are thinner on X than for bigger brands, but they exist. GitHub issues are clearer. This post cites both.

X: crash logs and unexpected quits

Public Cap complaint volume on X is thin. Two related posts from a crash-log thread:

@richiemcilroy shared a crash log directed to [email protected].

@imjudekim reported the app quit unexpectedly in the same conversation neighborhood.

That is not a statistical study. It is a signal that crash reports are reaching the maintainers in public.

GitHub issues that match the hang / freeze story

These CapSoftware/Cap issues existed when checked on 2026-09-14:

    • #1466 — Cap desktop hangs when stopping recording (closed). Hangs on stop for live and studio; upload hangs called out on self-hosted.
    • #1781 — Spins indefinitely after recording is stopped (closed). Recordings fail to open; reporter described lost long tutorials as a paid lifetime subscriber.
    • #1761 — Export exhausts VRAM/RAM and freezes (open at check time). Windows 11 export at 1080p/4K exhausting memory into an unkillable freeze.
    • #1166 — Cap keeps closing on new macOS (closed). Sequoia recordings dying with "Stream was stopped by the system."

Open-source projects fix issues over time. Closed does not mean "never happened." It means the thread is public evidence of the failure mode.

    What ScreenKite optimizes for

    Try a native path

    1. Download ScreenKite.
    2. Create an account.
    3. Record a 2–3 minute 4K take with mic and system audio.
    4. Stop recording. Confirm the project opens.
    5. Export on Metal. Compare wall-clock time to your current tool on the same Mac.

Cross-platform & Roadmap: macOS is fully native; the Windows native Beta application is now available for download (powered by a dedicated Direct3D/C++23 engine), with a Chrome extension in development.

Creators and teams choose it because it pairs ultra-fast local hardware exports and built-in link sharing with timeline AI agent editing via Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, or Grok Build. Describe the cut; the agent does the trims.

    Bottom line

Cap's public X trail is thin. GitHub is not: hang-on-stop, spin-after-record, export memory freezes, and macOS stream stops are documented in the issues above.

ScreenKite's answer is a native local recorder, Metal export up to 3 times faster in our tests, and a pay-once Pro path for clean exports on 3 Macs. There is no ScreenKite subscription; optional agents use the coding agent you already pay for (Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build, or Kimi).
