Recordly Stars vs Maturity: Why Screen Recording Needs a Serious Product

Recordly has about 28.5k GitHub stars, but public maintainer posts and a thick issue backlog show school interruptions and export, audio, and permission failures. Stars are not maturity. ScreenKite is the native Mac product for demos that ship.

Free to start. Pay once to own. Every editing feature is free. One payment of $79.99 removes the export watermark, covers 3 devices and never renews. Founder price until 2026-10-31, then $99.99. 83 purpose-built editing tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice. The fastest editor for AI — so your agent and you waste less time and money. ScreenKite for Mac.

Recordly is an open-source screen recorder with a huge GitHub audience. The webadderallorg/Recordly repo showed 28,504 stars when checked on 2026-09-14. Stars are a popularity signal. They are not proof that a screen recorder is ready for demos you cannot afford to lose.

Screen recording is not a toy side project. It asks for Screen Recording, microphone, and often Accessibility. Exports have to finish. Audio has to land in the file. Continuity matters when school, exams, or life pull the maintainer away. For a feature comparison, see ScreenKite vs Recordly or best Recordly alternatives (September 2026). This article focuses on continuity and the public issue backlog.

Public timeline: year 11, age 16, school, gap, comeback

These are public posts from the maintainer account @webadderall. Cite them as the author's own words, not as gossip.

    • 2026-05-16: year 11, exam block, export bugs, wanting v1.3.0.
    • 2026-06-16: "I'm 16, parents put screen time limits..."
    • School balance: Day 4, hard to balance with school.
    • High school startup camp.
    • 2026-09-08 comeback: Mac turned into a brick, logins nuked, back, v1.4.0 soon.

Screen recording asks for Screen Recording, microphone, and often Accessibility. Exports have to finish. When school, exams, or life pull the maintainer away for months, that continuity risk sits with every demo you built on the app.

During the quiet stretch, ScreenKite and others called the gap in public:

    • ScreenKite PSA (2026-08-12) on the author disappearing.
    • Mike Chong on the same thread.

The maintainer later returned and shipped again. Do not treat Recordly as permanently abandoned. Treat the gap as evidence that continuity is fragile when one busy student owns the trust surface.

    What the repo actually is

Per the GitHub description, Recordly aims at polished demo videos across Mac, Windows, and Linux. The project was created 2026-03-12. Architecture is Electron plus ScreenCaptureKit helpers on Mac (see the repo README and helper naming in public issues).

Release notes for v1.3.5-beta.2 (2026-07-11) state explicitly: Platform availability: Windows x64 and Linux x64 only, because Apple notarization credentials are currently unavailable.

A later release, v1.4.0 (2026-09-08), published macOS DMGs among its assets. You may treat that as Mac installers returning. Whether those builds are notarized is unconfirmed.

Open issues on the same check date (2026-09-14): 220 (gh search for open issues on the repo).

Issue backlog: export, audio, captions, permissions

These are GitHub user reports. Titles and open/closed state were verified with gh issue view on 2026-09-14. Closed does not mean "never happened." It means the failure mode is public history.

    Still open at check time:

    • #328 Exporting not working (open, 18 comments). Failed export / "Failed to fetch" style reports.
    • #375 Doesnt save the entire video (open, 13 comments). Recorded length shorter than the take.
    • #253 No microphone audio on macOS 15 (helper crashes) (open, 13 comments). Mic silent; helper crash path discussed.
    • #331 Unable to capture microphone and system audio correctly (open, 12 comments). Mic track empty or wrong while system audio works.
    • #662 Audio Recorded is getting echoed (open, 12 comments). Double-mic / echo reports on Mac and Windows.
    • #220 Failed to generate auto captions (open, 12 comments). Caption generation failures, including late reports on beta builds.
    • #960 App repeatedly requests Screen Recording permission (open, recent). Permission loop and failed capture after grant on Apple Silicon.

    Closed, still useful as history:

    • #400 Exported video duration much shorter (closed). Raw and export durations shorter than the recording.
    • #194 Export stuck 99% (closed). Export hanging near the end.

A 28k-star repo with this density of capture and export pain is the maturity problem in one picture.

ScreenKite: maturity for demos that ship

ScreenKite is a native macOS 15+ recorder and timeline editor (Apple Silicon and Intel). Account required. Free tier includes every editing feature; export carries a brand watermark and animated outro. • Export lightning fast in our tests and in user feedback.

Any downsides? The only downside is there's almost no downside. We're video creators ourselves, so we know exactly what you need.

ScreenKite runs natively on macOS and ships a native Windows Beta. Creators and teams choose it for fast local exports and timeline editing with the AI agent they already use: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build or Kimi. Describe the cut, and the agent does the trims.

    Bottom line

GitHub stars are not a maturity certificate. Public maintainer posts show year 11 and age 16, school and exam interruptions, a quiet stretch the community treated as a disappearance, then a comeback with v1.4.0. The issue tracker still carries export, audio, caption, and permission failures that matter when a screen recorder holds your most privileged Mac permissions.

If you want to waste your time on that roulette, use Recordly. If you need demos that ship, use a mature product: ScreenKite.
