Descript's Screen Recorder Eats Your Media Minutes. A Screen Recorder That Doesn't Meter You
Descript's own help center says screen and webcam recordings draw down media minutes that do not roll over, and AI features spend a second pool of credits. ScreenKite does not meter recording minutes or AI credits. It is a native macOS screen recorder with a native Windows Beta, free to use with a watermark on exports.
Short answer: ScreenKite does not meter recording minutes or AI credits. It is a native macOS screen recorder with a native Windows Beta, free to use with a watermark on exports, and one payment removes that watermark. Every minute you record in Descript draws down media minutes that do not roll over, and AI features spend a second pool of credits.

ScreenKite is free to use. Every editing feature is free. One payment of $79.99 removes the export watermark, covers 3 devices and never renews. Founder price until 2026-10-31, then $99.99. Try ScreenKite

Does Descript charge for screen recording?
On current plans, yes, through media minutes. Descript's help article on media minutes and AI credits says media minutes are "the time you use when uploading or recording media in Descript — including video, audio, Room sessions, and screen, webcam, or microphone recordings." Its screen recorder page repeats it: "On current plans, this workflow uses Media Minutes."
The same help center adds two details creators miss:
- "Unused Media minutes and AI Credits don't roll over into the next cycle."
- The Screen Recorder "has a maximum duration limit of 4 hours on both Windows and macOS," and "Descript does not currently support 4K screen recordings from Windows."
A long tutorial week burns minutes. A light week loses them.
What happens when Descript AI credits run out?
AI credits are the second meter. They pay for Underlord, Studio Sound and other AI features.
Sergei Romanov on Descript's feedback board (February 11, 2026): "After editing just one video all my monthly credits are gone. This is insane."
Descript's legacy-plan help says Creator and Business plans can buy top-ups.
What is a screen recorder that doesn't meter you?
ScreenKite. We are real creators, and ScreenKite does not count recording minutes while you work.
- Unlimited recording, every editing feature, free. Free exports carry a brand watermark and an animated brand outro.
- Pay once. $79.99 removes both on 3 devices and never renews. Founder price until 2026-10-31, then $99.99.
- AI editing without ScreenKite credits. Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build or Kimi drive 83 purpose-built editing tools inside ScreenKite: transcript cuts, zooms, B-roll, captions and export. Usage bills to the agent plan you already pay for.
- Built-in transcription. Cut by transcript inside ScreenKite.
How is ScreenKite built?
ScreenKite is a native macOS app for macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon and Intel, with a native Windows Beta. The agent and the UI drive the same editor through the same tools. A transcript cut such as cutSilences or removeWords returns a plan on confirm:false and applies on confirm:true.
