Screen Studio: How to Export by Sections or Range

You recorded a 25-minute walkthrough. You need the three-minute section on billing, as its own file, today. Not the whole video.

So you look for the thing every editor has: set an In point, set an Out point, export just that. In Screen Studio, it is not there.

The short answer

Screen Studio has no dedicated range-export control. There is an open request on its own feedback board asking for exactly this — Allow exporting by sections or range — which is a fair sign it is not shipping today.

That leaves you two options: work around it inside Screen Studio, or move the project somewhere that supports range export natively.

Working around it inside Screen Studio

The workaround is duplication. For each section you want as a separate file:

1. Duplicate the project so the original stays intact.
2. In the copy, trim or cut away everything before and after the section you want.
3. Export the copy.
4. Repeat from step 1 for the next section.

It works. It is also linear in the number of sections: five clips means five duplicated projects, five sets of trims, and five chances to trim the wrong edge. Every re-export is a full render, and you have to keep track of which copy is which.

If you only ever pull one clip out of one recording, this is fine. If you are cutting a long session into chapters, it stops being fine quickly.

The faster path: import the project and export a range

Screen Studio projects are not locked to Screen Studio. ScreenKite reads .screenstudio project files directly — zooms, cuts, camera, and layout carry over — and it has the In/Out range export that the workaround is standing in for.

Once the project is open in ScreenKite, exporting a section is two keystrokes and a dialog:

1. File > Import Screen Studio Project… and pick your .screenstudio file.
2. Put the playhead at the start of the section and press I.
3. Put it at the end and press O.
4. Press ⌘E. The export dialog opens with the scope already set to In/Out Selection.

Export. Then press I and O around the next section and export again. One project, no duplicates, no destructive trimming, and the original recording is untouched the whole time.

Which approach fits

Why this is worth the switch

Range export is a small feature, but it is the kind of small feature that decides how a whole afternoon goes. ScreenKite is native macOS — Swift, ScreenCaptureKit, and Metal — so each of those section exports finishes on the GPU rather than through a browser-engine render path. Recordings and projects stay on your disk. There is no account wall and no export cap to plan around.

Only shortcoming: macOS only today. ScreenKite for Chrome and Windows is in development.

Cut the session into clips

Import the .screenstudio project, mark the section, export it, repeat. No duplicate projects and no trimming you have to undo later.
